8/14/17 Huahine Week 9 - A New Companion, Rolling Down a Mountain, A Stranger Takes Off with the Car

Iorana!

Hope everyone's weeks went well! I know mine sure did!

A New Companion and Too Much In Common!!!
Ok, STORY TIME!!! Once upon a time there was a Sister named Sister Sellers who was called to serve a mission on the beautiful island Huahine. Her trainer, Soeur Wissocq was so wonderful that when transfers came she was moved to a neighboring island called Raiatea to become an STL. Poor sister Sellers was so nervous! Who was her new companion going to be? Would they get along? Would she snore? All she had was the name the Assistants had given her, but neither her nor Soeur Wissocq had ever met Soeur Miller. Lo and behold, all of her fears vanished when she saw Soeur Miller in the airport. She could already tell they were going to be amazing friends and have wonderful adventures together. One of those adventures happened to be about 5 minutes after they first met. They loaded Soeur Miller's luggage into the car and Soeur Sellers handed Soeur Miller the keys to their manual car... You can probably guess where this is going. Fear and confusion flashed across Soeur Miller's face "Is this a manual car?" She asked. Soeur Sellers eyes widened, her worst fears were quickly becoming a reality. "Yes, do you not know how to drive?" "No..." Anyway, we definitely just guessed how to drive. Both of us had a little experience, so with our combined knowledge and other sisters on the phone talking us through it, Soeur Miller was able to drive us home safely.

The Story Only Gets Worse, but God Watches Out for His Missionaries!
But were our adventures in that little manual car over??? Heck no! The next day I was showing Soeur Miller around the island and she was getting pretty good at being in 2nd and 3rd gear! Anyway, we had this brilliant idea to go to the Belvedere (a lookout point on the island) which could only be reached by a really steep mountain. About halfway up said mountain we realized there was no way we were going to make it to the top, and then we stalled, and then the car wouldn't turn on.... And then we started rolling backwards down this mountain. We made it down in one piece and were able to get the car started again. We got the car turned around and were laughing at our stupidity when to our horror we realized that to go back home we would have to make it up a slightly less steep hill that we had come down. We both said quick little prayers and attempted to make it up this hill. We were so close to the top when the same things started happening, except this time we were rolling off of the road. We stopped the car in some grass and tried again and again to get to the top, but

now the grass was slippery and there was no hope. Luckily the Lord watches out for his missionaries and sent two angels to help us. They for sure didn't look like angels and I will admit that I was a little afraid when we let one drive the car up the hill that we were never going to see our car again, but thank heavens Tahitians are so kind. Moral of the story: DON'T BE DUMB. Don't try to drive up hills you can't make it up, unless there are two sketchy guys who happen to be walking by who can help.

Going Solo on Huahine & Jean and Eugene
Ok, I hope that story didn't put anyone to sleep... maybe I should go back and add sound effects. ;) Once again I wish my life was a T.V. show. I felt like I was in an episode of Parks and Rec. or something! Ok, on to slightly less exciting news, we're officially the only missionaries on the island! Elder Nelson finished his mission and is returning home and the Elder who was going to replace him can't get here for a couple days, so they moved Elder Hemon to Tahiti while they figure everything out. We're going to have to delay the baptism of Jean and Eugene because no one is here to do the interview, but I think that'll work out ok.

Needing a Cord and Expensive Postage, but Beauty Everywhere so All is Well!
So the one day I have amazing pictures to show you all I don't have anything to upload them with! I have been borrowing something from Soeur Wissocq that works and Soeur Miller doesn't have anything that works for my camera. :( I'm so sorry... I'm going to have to figure something out because having no pictures is unacceptable!!! (NOTE: Her family sent her a cord a few weeks ago. We hope it has arrived in Tahiti and will come when the Elders fly back. $32 postage for a $9 cord!) Last P-Day it rained a lot so we weren't able to go on the hike we were planning on going on, but we jumped in a car with some members and they were able to take us on a tour of the Island! We went to beaches I had never seen and holy cow I can honestly say I'm in the prettiest place on earth.

About Sister Miller
About Soeur Miller: She's a fabulous human being. She's from Utah, loves to read, plays soccer, already did 3 semesters at school, and is super sarcastic and funny. This is her second area, so we're learning a lot together! She's about 6 months into her mission and is so excited to be serving in Huahine! I guess missionaries back on the main island call it the promised land, because it's pretty much perfect here.

Follow Up to Questions & Grocery Stores
The cuts are good (last post), only other ailment is that I have a cold again. Just a cough, but it's getting better. So we have one grocery store and it's air-conditioned. It's pretty nice! Pretty much everything is shipped to the main island and then gets shipped to all the other islands.

Anyway, that's all for this week! Thanks for tuning into "the shockingly true story of my life" and join me for another episode next week! ;) I love you all!
